What is tape reading and why is it so important?

Tape reading is the art of studying pure and magnified price action real time based on the Level II box. Using the tape you are able to gauge players psychology and imbalances in supply and demand. Reading the tape is a leading indicator, not like charts and indicators where they are based on past data. Tape reading is an important skill to master as an intraday trader because it allows you to see real time where there is buying and selling going on at level. This is also a very important skill because it will improve you efficiency, risk/reward ratio, and it will allow you to catch larger moves all while allowing you to take on the least amount of risk possible. Tape reading is your edge and will put ahead of many other traders that think technical analysis is the only thing they should know. The advantages of reading the tape are that it brings consistency to your trading, it is a leading indicator, you are able to see buyers/sellers in real time, it minimizes your trading risk and it gets you in more plays that the charts don’t show you. Finally, reading the tape is about analysis the bid, offer, size, volume, and prints. With reading the take you will be able to determine where the stock is going to move 90% of the time.

How does tape reading give you an edge?

Tape reading gives you an edge because it is a real time indicator and is not based on past data. It is reading the real-time order flow of a stock, thus allowing you to go with the flow. With reading the tape you are able to see where someone is buying or selling and get in at great entries while maintaining minimal risk. Back before charts were actively used most intraday traders would trade by using their skills of reading the tape, and reading the tape only. There were no charts or indicators for them to use thus going with the flow, the order flow that is. The last thing tape reading gives you an edge over is against the algorithms and HFTs. This alone is a part of the new trading world and by reading the tape is allows you to have a chance on combating them

What can you see on the tape that you can’t see on the charts?

By reading the tape you can see the active buyers and sellers and see what levels they are participating at by watching the supply and demand they seek. You can follow a certain buyer and recognize the pattern in which he is accumulating the stock. The same goes for sellers. By reading the tape you can identify the patterns that the charts do not show and with this you will be able to get in and out at great prices. With tape reading you can feel how the market is taking your orders and have a sense on if a certain stock is weak or strong. For example: if a stock looks weak on the chart but it is very difficult for your bid to get hit then that is a clue that there is not that much selling happening, so the stock might not be that weak after all… but more on this later. Finally, charts are showing you past data... granted charts do work but when you mix tape reading and technical analysis you will have an edge 90% of traders do not.
